Why we need large carnivores?

Large carnivores are predators and are therefore at the top of the trophic pyramid of the ecosystem, regulating the overall functioning of natural ecosystems. They play a key role in regulating the densities and behaviour of ungulates. Some large carnivores are also scavengers (e.g. wolverines or bears) and therefore play a sanitary role in the ecosystem. In addition, some species of large carnivores, which are also omnivores (e.g. bears), contribute to the dispersal of plant seeds and fruits through their feeding cycle, thereby increasing the vegetation structure and diversity in a given ecosystem.
